The worst sound a parent can hear is silence where there should be breath. When my son Leo passed, the world didn’t just stop; it shattered into a million sharp, meaningless pieces. In the fog of grief, the decisions felt overwhelming. Then, my sister mentioned a green burial.
The idea clicked. Leo loved dirt, worms, and rolling in the grass. The thought of placing him in a polished metal box, sealed in concrete, felt like a betrayal of everything he was. We found a craftsman who made small caskets from willow. It was beautiful, woven and sturdy, yet soft to the touch.
We gathered in a sun-dappled woodland, a designated natural burial ground. We placed Leo inside, wrapped in his favorite cotton blanket. We tucked in letters and drawings from his siblings. As we lowered the cradle of willow into the earth, it didn’t feel like we were hiding him away. We were tucking him in for a long, natural sleep. We planted an oak sapling above him. Now, when we visit, we don’t visit a stone. We visit a growing, living tree. His body nourishes its roots. In a way, he is still growing. He is still here. The green coffin wasn’t just a choice; it was the only choice that made sense for our boy who loved the earth.
